The intolerance of the niqab and the burqa has reared its ugly head again in the current discussion of banning both kinds’ of garments commonly worn by Muslim women. The stigmatization that has come with the traditional headdresses has shadowed both the cultural and personal relationships behind these garments making them articles of clothing believed to be a tool in the demonizing and oppression of Islamic women.

The depiction of aspects of Middle Eastern cultures by the West has aided in the many preconceived notions of Muslim women. Many people who are not aware of the background behind the burqa and niqab have defined Islam by the truths they believe represent a collective group of women
