The stigmatization that now comes with being associated with Muslims (post 9/11) has influenced the lives of many Muslim women as well as their cultural and personal relationships. Muslim men have now become tools in the demonizing and oppression of women of Islam through media scrutiny and imprecise illustrations. The depiction of aspects of Islam and its men by the Western media especially has aided in the many preconceived notions of Muslim women. Many people who are not aware of the background behind Islam have defined it by the truths they believe represent a collective group of men and women


After 9/11 the assumption that Muslim women were bound by their culture and its practices came into play as images of veiled women were produced on the covers of magazines, newspapers, and television screens

1995’s “Losing Isaiah” starring Black actress Halle Berry showcased a crack and sex addicted Black mother fighting to regain custody of her son from a well established white social worker. The message behind Losing Isaiah is breaking racial barriers and social acceptance of racialized men and women, however the underlying message appears to support the stereotype of the incapable black mother; “just as white women in the 19^th century facilitated imperialism through the assumption of the whole savior role of less fortunate women, so do white women in the 20^th century”

Is this an example of Orientalism at its best?

There has been an enduring relationship between Western imaginings and the Japanese woman. Dressed in kimono and made up as a geisha, she has often been used in illustrations and cartoons as an archetypical gendered symbol of her country. What other elements do you think also contribute to the hyper sexualized identity of the Japanese women?

Certain childhood movies and televisions shows have seen great success over the years as they have entered the homes of million. It is important to use a close eye with certain pictures because they have definitely found their way through the cracks. From Aladdin to the Pocahontas, childhood classics convey Orientalist views, ideas, and belief systems through their illustrations, the voices and appearances of certain characters and the overall story that is told. It is important to identify the power dynamics within these movies and pay careful attention to what is being embedded into the minds of many children.
