The images in the previous entry are a great way to introduce the concept of Orientalism. It is everyday illustrations like those ones that add to the perpetuating ideas behind racialized women. It is time to answer a very important question; what is Orientalism?

ORIENTALISM is:

· a term used for the imitation or depiction of aspects of Eastern bodies in the West by writers, designers and artists.

· Many scholars use the term to describe a pervasive Western tradition, both academic and artistic, of prejudiced outsider interpretations of the East, shaped by the attitudes of European colonialism

· Stereotypes about Islamic men and women can also be interpreted through this term

Orientalism has had a great affect on the lives of diverse men and women around the world. The misconceptions derived from colonialistic views have had a great affect on the ability for racialized people to excel and gain acceptance within society.
